Suse MacDonald’s
first children’s book, Alphabetics won the Caldecott
Award-and jump-started her career as one of the 20th
Century’s
most inventive and innovative author/ illustrators in the
world of children’s book publishing. Since 1986, Suse has
written and/or illustrated 18 books, with many more to come.
Launched in 2008 under Simon & Schuster’s Little Simon
imprint, Alphabet Animals joins a long and colorful parade
of books written by Suse MacDonald. A great pleasure for
Suse is in encouraging readers to go beyond their usual
stopping points and make their own artistic discoveries.
“Children are inventors,” she believes. “They just need
situations that bring out that quality of inventiveness.” In
books like Alphabet Animals, she creates those
opportunities—and our licensing partners can too.

In this innovative book, animals take
the shapes of all the letters in the alphabet! From an
alligator to a zebra, each animal represents a different
letter—but what could that letter be? To find the
answer, children can pull a page from a pocket and see
the letter and the animal's name. This fun “slide and
peek” format is perfect for children 2-5 who are
becoming familiar with and learning the phonetics of the
alphabet. Children will learn their ABCs while being
exposed to a wide array of animals. Parents and kids
alike will delight in Suse MacDonald's unique,
cut-paper, collage-style artwork.
